What Makes a Facebook Post have the Potential to go Viral and why that is good for your Small Business!

For those passionate about social media, few things can match the exhilaration of one of your posts going viral – and that's precisely what occurred for me last week! Every business dreams of viral growth. It is the perfect way to attract attention, new followers, - and greater business opportunities.

So, what does it mean to go viral? A social media post going viral refers to a post that spreads rapidly and widely across social media platforms, often far beyond the creator's immediate network of friends or followers. When a post goes viral, it receives an exceptionally high level of attention, engagement, and sharing.

The post that went viral: In my post (below), I shared a series of photographs showing a few of the steps I took to create a Number Five design I made for my granddaughters 5th Birthday a few years ago! It had a simple caption, six hashtags, and one link back to Qualatex - nothing unusual or out of the ordinary.

Check out my posts Insights!

Having 1,627,745 impressions on a single Facebook post is a significant level of exposure for the content. Impressions represent the number of times the post was displayed on someone's screen. It is an important metric to gauge the reach and visibility of the content. However, impressions alone don't tell the whole story. To better understand the performance of a post, you should also consider additional metrics such as:

Engagement: Check how many likes, comments, and shares your post received. High engagement indicates that your content resonated with your audience and encouraged interaction - my post has received to date 854 comments and 494 shares and 2.7k likes! This is a first and I would definitely like to keep the momentum going!

Certainly, this situation is undeniably thrilling, but how could I leverage it to my advantage?

Observing the post gaining significant traction, I decided to harness its potential. It resonated with individuals eager to create the design themselves or connect with others (who potentially could make the design) by tagging them in the post. Acknowledging the importance of engagement in the social media realm, I expressed my gratitude for their comments and thoughtfully embedded a link to one of my blog posts, which offered an extensive tutorial on creating the design. This strategic move resulted in a boost in the Click-Through Rate (CTR). During that period, the post's views experienced substantial growth, introducing an entirely new audience to my blog. Had the blog been monetised, this surge in traffic could have potentially translated into income!

Here are some of the key factors that could contribute to viral success:

➡️ compelling content: something that captures the audience's attention and makes them want to share it.
➡️ visual appeal: Posts with eye-catching images, videos, or graphics tend to perform better.
➡️ timing: Posting at the right time when your target audience is most active on Facebook can boost the chances of your content going viral.
➡️ emotion: Posts that evoke strong emotions, such as happiness, anger, or surprise, are more likely to be shared.
➡️ relevance: Content that's relevant to current events, trends, or popular is more likely to go viral.
➡️ engagement: The more people engage with your post, the more it's likely to appear in others' newsfeeds.
➡️ influencers: Influencers and other businesses can share your content with their followers, increasing its visibility.
➡️ hashtags: Use relevant hashtags and keywords to increase the discoverability of your post.
➡️consistency and community engagement: Consistently posting high-quality content can help build a loyal audience that's more likely to share your posts.

Why are viral posts good for your small business:

⭐️ Increased Visibility: Viral posts reach a vast audience, boosting brand awareness.
⭐️ Brand Exposure: Viral content enhances recognition.
⭐️ Cost-Effective Marketing: Virality often requires minimal ad spending.
⭐️ Engagement and Community Building: Fosters community growth and customer relationships.
⭐️ Sales Potential: Drives inquiries and sales.
⭐️ Competitive Edge: Sets you apart in your niche.

While not every post goes viral (and sadly they don't) consistent quality content and best practices can increase your chances of experiencing viral moments that benefit your small business.

In conclusion, I had a thrilling few days as I watched the shares and comments on the post multiply, and it became quite riveting viewing! 😄

When I began sharing the link to my blog post, that added another layer of excitement, with the number of views increasing by the minute. It went from roughly 400 to 3,000 in just a few days! Notably, my Facebook and blog post followers saw substantial growth, making this entire experience a great success.

I've heard some people claim that Facebook is less effective than Instagram, but after this experience, I'm not entirely convinced!

Happy Ballooning!

Tips on how to make your Social Media Posts Engaging and Memorable

Tips for Creating Engaging Social Media Posts

The first thing I always recommend when aiming for more engagement on Social Media is aiming to regularly post on Facebook and Instagram. However, to make your posts memorable and engaging, you must take a unique approach. Nowadays, people tend to keep scrolling and only engage with posts that catch their attention. So, how can you make sure that your potential customers stop, look, and follow your posts? Here are some helpful tips to consider:

Use eye-catching visuals: Incorporate high-quality images, videos, or graphics that grab attention and make your posts visually appealing. Visual content tends to attract more engagement than text-only posts.

These are my top three posts according to the number of impressions and the reach they have achieved over the past two years. All three posts have something in common; they don't just feature balloons, but also include a "human element".

Having a human element in an Instagram post adds a sense of relatability and authenticity, which can make the post more appealing to viewers. Here are a few reasons why:

Emotional connection: Seeing a person in a post allows viewers to connect on an emotional level. It evokes feelings of empathy, relatability, and familiarity. Humans are naturally drawn to other human faces and expressions, so including a person in your post can help establish a deeper connection with your audience.

Authenticity and trust: Incorporating a human element in your post can make it feel more genuine and authentic. It humanises your brand or message, showing that there are real people behind it. This transparency can help build trust with your audience and make them more receptive to your content.

Storytelling: Humans are natural storytellers, and featuring people in your posts allows you to tell stories visually. Whether it is showcasing a behind-the-scenes moment, sharing a customer's experience, or highlighting your team members, storytelling through a human element can be compelling and engaging.

Relatability and social proof: When people see others like themselves using or benefiting from a product or service, it creates a sense of relatability and social proof. It can help potential customers envision themselves in that situation and increase their trust in your brand.

Increased engagement: Posts with human faces often attract more attention and engagement. Studies have shown that photos with faces tend to receive more likes, comments, and shares compared to those without. Including a human element can capture viewers' attention as they naturally gravitate towards human faces.

While having a human element in your Instagram posts can be beneficial, it is still essential to ensure that it aligns with your brand and the message you want to convey. It should feel authentic and relevant to your content strategy and target audience.

If you have an Instagram Business account, you can access Instagram Insights, which provides analytics and data about your posts' performance. Insights will show you metrics such as reach, impressions, engagement rate, and the number of likes, comments, and shares for each post. Use this data to identify your most successful posts.

Write captivating headlines or captions: using concise and attention-grabbing headlines or captions will make people want to click, read, or engage with your post. Use creativity, humour, or curiosity to pique their interest!

Tell stories: Stories have a powerful impact on engagement. Share personal anecdotes, customer success stories, or behind-the-scenes glimpses to captivate your audience and make your posts more relatable.

Here is a great example of a balloon business sharing more than just a photograph of a balloon wall; they go into detail and talk about how big the wall is, about how they love to create new colours and how they think the design will look fabulous in Pink! Their post is colourful, exciting and charming, everything a customer wants to see!

Be authentic and genuine: Show your personality and let your brands authentic voice shine through your posts. Avoid being overly promotional and focus on building genuine connections with your audience. Use engaging visuals that showcase your unique style and personality.

Here are some great ideas:

  • Share your design inspiration and how you incorporate it into your work.
  • If you pre-design your decor either by hand-drawing or by using a design program such as BalloonPro.co, why not show the before and after?

Below is a balloon wall that I designed for a training course some years ago in Israel. The three images show the wall design, the wall made from balloons and finally a design image showing how the wall could be incorporated with other decorations.

  • Don't be afraid to share your mistakes or failures, as they can be valuable learning experiences or relatable moments for others.
  • Show your appreciation for your audience and the support they give you.
  • Use language that is authentic and easy to understand, and avoid jargon or technical terms that may alienate your audience.
  • Be consistent in your messaging and tone across all of your design content.
  • Remember to have fun and enjoy the creative process, as passion and enthusiasm can be contagious.
Encourage interaction: Pose questions, ask for opinions, or invite people to share their experiences in the comments. Encourage your audience to engage with your posts and create a sense of community.

Use hashtags strategically: Research relevant and trending hashtags and incorporate them into your posts. This can help increase the discoverability of your content and attract a broader audience.

Provide valuable content: Share informative, educational, or entertaining content that your audience will find valuable. Offer tips, tutorials, industry insights, or exclusive deals to establish yourself as a trusted resource.

Utilise storytelling formats: Experiment with formats like Instagram Stories, Facebook Live, or TikTok to deliver content in a more interactive and engaging manner. These formats allow for behind-the-scenes glimpses, Q&A sessions, or interactive polls.

Be consistent and frequent: Regularly posting fresh and engaging content keeps your audience interested and coming back for more. Find a posting schedule that works for you and consistently deliver valuable content.

Analyse and learn from your data: Monitor your social media analytics to understand what type of content resonates with your audience. Pay attention to metrics like engagement rate, reach, and click-through rate to optimise your future posts.

Remember, creating engaging and memorable social media posts requires experimentation and adaptation. Continuously monitor and analyse your results, listen to your audience, and refine your content strategy accordingly.

Personally, I know that this information will really benefit my own social media posts. When I look at my Instagram posts, I can see that with a little bit more thought and a few more words, I can transform my posts into something that my potential and current followers want to see.

Happy Ballooning!

It's Almost Halloween - Here are Some Last Minute, Fun Ideas that You Can Share With Your Customers

Promoting balloons and balloon decor may seem to be the obvious choice of content for your social media page. But when it comes to engaging with your followers, it is important to share a variety of different posts to keep your audience interested and entertained by the things that you are sharing with them.

With only a few days to Halloween, this would be the perfect time to post a daily Halloween idea/suggestion, or a fun Halloween related quote or jokes.

Here are some ideas plus a little text that you can use along with your posts!

"Children love to cook! This is the perfect opportunity to create some fabulous Halloween cakes and cookies - cooking with kids can be fun and enjoyable for both the children and adults. Your children will get the joy of creating fun bakes and the pleasure of eating them too, all while you create lasting memories that your children may treasure forever."

"We know how much children love to play games, so why not organise some fun Halloween themed activities!"

"Get your children crafting and having fun - create crafting stations where they can let their imaginations run wild"

" Don't forget to decorate your homes, both inside and out and create lots of excitement for all the children (and adults) in your neighbourhood"

"Halloween is definitely not cancelled this year, but it
will be a little bit different - let's make it memorable for all the right reasons!"

Wishing you all a safe & happy Halloween!

Happy Ballooning!

Everything You Need to Know About Zoe Adam-Jones - Designer Extraordinaire and CANVA Queen!

I first met Zoe two years ago when I attended the Australasian Balloon Convention in Australia. At that time, Zoe was just starting her wholesale distribution business Jaz Trading. Over the past two years, Zoe has made her mark and continuously contributes to the balloon industry with her fabulous design skills, as well as sharing her digital marketing knowledge, and working tirelessly to protect the balloon industry taking on the role of Director of PEBA - Pro Environment Balloon Alliance.

I recently had the opportunity to work alongside Zoe at the Qualatex Event Brazil and got to know her a little better!

Zoe very kindly agreed to be included as one of our Very Best Balloon Blog Feature Artists, and has given us insight to her ballooning life!

Zoe Adam-Jones, CBA,
 Jaz Trading in Queensland, Australia.

When did you first discover balloons?
"I first discovered balloons in 2008. My husband worked for a balloon and party distributor in Australia and I was inspired by a customer of his that had produced a twisting DVD. He bought home a bag of 260Q’s, I was scared of popping them but he said they were designed to be pushed to their limits, unfortunately he chose a bag of Jewel Tone 260Q’s that were super hard to twist and every one I twisted POPPED! At least it started desensitising me to the sound that I would later become a BIG part of my life.  Around the same time I was ready for a career change. After working in HR and Acquisition roles in large corporate businesses, I decided to retrain in Marketing, Communications and Design. In 2009, I took a 6 week contract to work with my husband on a project with the balloon and party distributor that he worked for. I ended up staying for 18 months and fell forever in love with balloons. I became a Certified Balloon Artist and started working with retailers to showcase new products and promote innovative thinking and new ideas with balloons through education workshops."

Zoe created this fabulous stage decor for the Qualatex Event in Brazil.
Tell us a little about your business.
"JAZ Trading is a wholesale distribution business located on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. We opened in early 2017 and supply balloons, event florals and paper party to balloon decorators and event stylists. As a distributor, I am in a unique position to mentor and support balloon professionals and small businesses in our industry. Their businesses need to thrive in order for mine to thrive too. I believe that the more successful we are together, the stronger the entire industry becomes."
Beautiful Baby Girl Balloons and Flowers Design by Zoe Adam-Jones
Beautiful balloons with flowers display by Zoe.

What were you doing before JAZ Trading?
"In 2010, I took a leap of faith and started my own Digital Marketing & Business Consultancy company, Creative JAZ. I primarily worked with small businesses and start-ups to create a digital extension of their business. One of my clients was Pioneer Australia which later led me to become the Queensland Distributor of Qualatex Balloons."

"Laced Heart" by Zoe Adams-Jones
How cool is this beautiful "Laced Heart" design by Zoe!
How did you learn to work with balloons
"Coming from a family of artists, I've always dabbled in design using different mediums. My Grandfather, my mum and my aunty were all professional artists and paved their way differently as painters. My creative passion really came to life when I entered the balloon industry. It allowed me the opportunity to combine my love for colour, texture, movement, atmosphere and fun with another true love of mine – design.
I have not been a professional balloon decorator, however my family heritage, my background in design, creativity and eye for colour have transferred perfectly into this medium.
When I first started 10 years ago, I immersed myself in the industry. For starters, I took a keen interest in what decorators and retailers were doing. I developed relationships with suppliers and absorbed all the information that manufacturers had to offer. The presence of social media wasn’t as strong at that time, so I spent countless hours looking through websites, catalogues, books, and magazines. I studied back issues of Images Magazine for inspiration and techniques and then I joined the QBN and became a CBA. I attended whatever education days and training workshops I could and networked with industry professionals. Then I playedI tried products, combined techniques and gave things a go."
This elegant rainbow design truly shows Zoe's passion for colour!
How do you find your inspiration?
  1. Other Balloon Artists - Pick the artists that you love and follow them on social media. Some of my favourites (these are just a few, the full list is VERY long) are Sue Bowler, Cam Woody, Shannon Kilford, Ruti Grodzinsky, Sara Thorne Meyer - I love their attention to detail, their style and their use of colour.
  2. Google Images, Instagram and Pinterest - I spend countless hours scrolling through feeds and search results. I save images or posts that immediately catch my eye. I also use these channels to search for related themes. For example, I will not just search for balloons… I search for cakes, cookies and décor related to the theme which broadens my exposure to new ideas.
  3. Colour – Colour is my world! I love to see what I can create by mixing paints… except I don’t use acrylics or watercolours, I use balloons! One of my favourite searches on Pinterest is “colour palettes”. I draw a lot of inspiration from different combinations of colours.
  4. Interior and Landscape Design – these different crafts bring inspiration for combining textures and the placement of elements in a design. I also find them very helpful to identify trends and styles.
  5. Graphic Art – I am inspired by the use of line, typography and colour in graphics. Or I may see an image that I love and then work out how to create that using balloons.
Zoe sets the scene with this beautiful decor!
What advice would you give someone just starting out?
  1. Hustle and heart will set you apart. That’s not my quote but it is one that I live by. Starting a new business is HARD WORK… And if your heart is in it, you will find it easier to hustle and find the drive and determination to be successful.
  2. Surround yourself with positive people and have a positive mindset. The right people will pick you up when you need it and you can do the same when they need you.
  3. Brand recognition is so important to successful marketing. Spend time on your branding from the start. Develop an authentic business image and brand and use it consistently across all mediums.
  4. Attend AS MANY educational and industry related events as you can. (more on this in a minute 😊)

Arbour Decor by Zoe Adam-Jones

What do you believe is the best way to promote your business?
"Authentic marketing. Work out who you are, align your core personal and business beliefs and promote this to your market. Use all different channels to show the world who you are and why they need your business. Make them feel like they know you and that they are part of what you do.
Once you work out who your customer is, work out where they are looking for you (eg. Internet search, Instagram, Facebook, Bridal Expo, Function Venues etc) and make sure you are there!  And network! Talk to everyone you meet about what you do, being a balloon artist is such a great topic of conversation and people remember it! Attend industry events and network with other balloon professionals. Refer work to others and they will refer back to you."
Zoe sets the scene with this fabulous "Good Vibes" decor.

How important is social media to your business?
"It is vital to our business. As a distributor, we have a very select range of customers, mostly balloon artists, entertainers, retailers and event stylists. Most of them are using social media for their businesses, so when JAZ trading is on there, we are meeting them where they are already. They are also very visual people who work in an emotive industry. We need to be sure to inspire them and appeal to them with the images we use and content that we create.
Balloon artists can look at this the same way; Mother’s, Brides, the Personal Assistant to the CEO, the Event Organiser of the local venues, the husband who forgot his wife’s birthday, these are all your potential customers and they are using social media constantly too. So make sure you are there, and that you are posting regularly (that is one thing I am always striving to improve on, posting more frequently.)"
What are your thoughts on educational events
"They are one of the most important things you can attend in this industry. Not only do workshops and courses teach you new techniques and ideas but I also believe they keep you motivated and provide opportunities to learn from each other. You may meet people who are having similar challenges to you.  Knowledge is power and we never stop learning. Even the most seasoned professional will always pick up a new technique or a different way of doing things. The opportunities for new inspiration and ideas in this industry are amazing."
Zoe creates this fabulous star using Chrome Gold and Green balloons.
Can you tell us a little about about PEBA and role within it?
"This industry gives me so much more than I could ever give back. This is my livelihood, a community of creative and brave small business owners that inspire and challenge me and friends from all over the world. It is for these reasons and so many more that I feel compelled to give back. I do this through education and training and through my position as a Director of PEBA. We are all being called upon, as citizens of this planet to be more responsible, more sustainable and to think about our actions and behaviours. As an industry, we have to move and change with the times. How do we do this? By accepting responsibility for past practices that no longer serve us or our planet, by changing what we do in our business and by educating our customers and the public. PEBA encourages all balloon professionals to stop the practice of deliberately releasing helium balloons and also to commit to the responsible use and disposal of balloons. This will help to look after the planet and ensure the success of our industry long into the future."

3rd Birthday Party Decor created by Zoe Adam-Jones
Zoe created this fabulous train-themed decor for her son's third birthday!
Wow, Zoe's ballooning journey has been amazing up to this point, and I am sure this is just only the beginning!

A huge thank you to Zoe for sharing her story with the Very Best Balloon Blog, and for all that she does for the balloon industry! I know that she has definitely helped me to better understand how to use CANVA, as well as some other cool tips and tricks with social media!

Happy Ballooning!

Are Your Social Media Posts Engaging and Memorable?

So you've started posting on Facebook and Instagram on a regular basis - that's a great start! But are you making your posts engaging and memorable?

I don't know about you, but when I scroll through my Facebook and Instagram feeds, I realise that gone are the days when I like every other post. It takes something a little bit more unique to make me stop and look.

So how are we going to get our potential customers to stop, look, and hopefully like and follow our posts?

Making Our Posts Engaging and Memorable

For example, when we are looking for someone to decorate a forthcoming event, which would you prefer: Working with an event organiser who you can relate to and make a personal connection with or with a faceless company that simply shows endless photographs on their Instagram account? This is a tough call, as stunning decor photographs on Instagram can be arresting and a great attention grabber. But we also have to remember that what we see is not always what we get!

The more memorable and likeable your business appears to be, the higher the likelihood that customers will pick you over someone else. So how do we get our potential customers to stop, look, and hopefully follow our posts?

Social Storytelling

I recently read an article by Jade Fraser - BAPIA's (Balloon and Party Industry Alliance) Social Media Manager - Your Social Media Checklist. With Jade's permission I am sharing it with you here, as it explains so how to turn a simple post into a great story!

"We’ve spoken before about the importance of storytelling when it comes to sales. The more memorable and likeable you can make your business, the higher the likelihood that customers will pick you over someone else. You may think that the day to day of your business isn’t exciting enough for storytelling but think again. Next time you’re stuck for what to say, follow this simple storytelling checklist. Take Jenny for instance, who recently went on a training course. Imagine Jenny has uploaded this photo with the following caption:

“Team work! Group column building at the BAPIA Chris Adamo cba Tour. #bapiaparty
Now, Jenny thinks about the day again, this time considering the following questions:

Checklist

1. What’s happening in this picture?

          2. Did anything funny or relatable happen at the time?

          3. What did I do well in this situation?

          4. How might this benefit my customers? 5

5. What’s next for me?
After following the checklist, Jenny realised she actually had a lot to share about the day:

“Team work making the dream work at the BAPIA Chris Adamo, CBA, Tour. The day started off shaky - I realised I’d walked into the wrong conference room when the overhead projector read ‘Travel Expo’ - oops, typical me! Things soon picked up though; I mastered these columns Chris showed us really quickly, woohoo! Expect to see LOTS more fun, new designs from me this year. Next, I want to master weaving flowers into my designs, ready for wedding season! #bapiaparty”
Do you see how, with a bit of storytelling, the same post becomes much more appealing and memorable? Though it may seem like a minor thing, you should consider every social media post as an advertisement for your business. Generally, it takes at least six exposures to an advert before a customer commits to sale. So, in a sea of social media posts, it’s really important that yours stand out. A post with a descriptive, well-thought-out caption will stand out a lot more in the middle of a scrolling session."

I found another great example of storytelling when I looked through my Instagram feed this morning. Born To Party in Sydney, Australia, shared a great photograph of an abstract organic balloon wall that they recently made. They talk about how big the wall is, about how they love to create new colours and how they think the design will look fabulous in Pink! Their post is colourful, exciting and charming, everything a customer what's to see!

Personally, I know that this information will really benefit my own social media posts. When I look at my Instagram posts, I can see that with a little bit more thought and a few more words, I can transform my posts into something that my potential and current followers want to see.

A huge thank you to Jade and BAPIA for sharing this post with The Very Best Balloon Blog! For more great articles by Jade click HERE for a direct link.

Happy Ballooning!

Instagram — Are You Using It To Grow Your Balloon Business?

Instagram is one of the social media groups that I have not really got to grips with. Since I set up my Instagram account, I have used it mainly to post personal photographs, rather than balloons or business related items. It was only when Shannon Kilford of Born to Party in Sydney, Australia, made a really interesting comment regarding Instagram on a recent blog post, I decided that I should really find out more about this social media platform.
"I am also a passionate Instagram user! This social media platform has literally changed my life and my business! 90% of our customers use it and come to us with pictures off our Instagram account requesting a particular design. I also find it useful for instant messaging and sending images back and forth to my clients. Not many days go by when I'm not using direct messages to communicate with my clients this way! As our account grows, so does our business. It's definitely not a coincidence. You are welcome to check out our Instagram here; www.instagram.com/borntopartyshop
We also use Facebook, and in the beginning it was a great tool for growing our business. But since Facebook made changes to its reach for business pages, it is not nearly as good as it used to be so we don't focus on it as much as we used to."

Do you pin... are you a pinner... Is Pinterest good for business?

Wow, this is my 100th blog! I have enjoyed writing each and everyone of them! Some have been more challenging than others with a fair amount of research required, like this one on Pinterest!
It is really interesting when I have talked to people about Pinterest, a lot of us really do not understand how it works or more importantly, how it can work for them?

So, here it goes, lets see if I can unravel the mystery behind Pinterest!

What is
In Pinterest's own words, 'it's a tool for collecting and organising things that you love'... a 'virtual pinboard', a place to 'pin' all the things that you like and want to look at again!

For me, it's a place to gather inspiration, check out trends, see what new and hot, to show off my own work, to collect work that I like... the list is endless, but needless to say, I love it and oh yes, I forgot to say, it's pretty addictive too!

In fact Pinterest is one of the fastest growing social media sites that we should all be aware of!

There is a 'pinning 101', the very basics on how it works and how to get started, so if this is all new to you I recommend that you take a quick visit here! just click this link PINTEREST

Pinterest language

A Pin - an image added to Pinterest.

A Pinboard - a set of theme-based pins.

Pinning - the act of visually sharing content.

Repin - reposting someone else's pin.

Pin It Button - button that can be placed on websites to facilitate sharing on pinterest. pins added using the pin It button link back to the site they came from.

Pinner - the person who does the sharing.
